Let’s face it: Christmas/*insert your favorite holiday here* decorations are difficult and time-consuming to put up, and unless you’ve got a knack for doing it, your efforts frankly look kind of pathetic. Well, I can say from a limited amount of experience that I certainly don’t have a knack for doing real decorations right, and that’s why I turn to decorating up my computer instead. The physics of decorating your Mac for the holidays is much simpler. Rather than dealing with hooks and extension cords and managing your electricity bill, you just have to find the holiday decoration apps, set them to auto-start when you login, and make sure that they don’t overtax your CPU. Well, after quite a bit of experience decorating my Mac for the holidays and having searched quite a bit of the web for the best Christmas/holiday apps, I’m here to help.

And so begins my latest blogging series, and the first one I’ve done since last March. It’s called Deck the Desktops, and it’s going to be like a little advent calendar happening right here on my blog. Each day from now until Christmas Day, I’ll post a new Deck the Desktops mini-review of different apps that I have tried to help get my desktop into the Christmas spirit. (They’re mini-reviews because most of these are just eye candy with little functionality, so there’s not much to review.) No, they’re not as delicious as the little chocolates you can get from most advent calendars, because I haven’t figured out how to effectively deliver chocolates via WordPress yet, but if you give them a try, they’ll give your desktop a daily injection of that much-sought-after hoiiday cheer.

Of course, the first and easiest way to get your desktop ready for the holidays is a good-looking holiday desktop picture to spice things up, which is my very first tip for this series. If you’ve got any pictures from past holiday seasons, plop one up on your screen, or you could find some nice wallpapers on Google Images, which is what I chose. Regardless of what other decorations you use, your desktop picture will still have the most impact in getting into that holiday spirit.
