iClip is a sweet application that takes Mac OS X’s clipboard to a whole new level, and is an essential application for anyone who uses the clipboard frequently. Throw in a breathtaking design that makes the application that much easier to use, and you have a winner.
From the surface, iClip is a “clipboard” history. Ever copy something to the clipboard, and then copy something else, and the realize that you need to paste the first thing? iClip keeps a running “Clipboard Recorder” which keeps track of a history of everything that you copy to the clipboard, available at any time. However, iClip
iClip lives as a hidden panel that pops out from any side of the screen (like the Dock). It includes a number of “bins” which can be used to store anything: text, images, video, deep-fried pickle hearts (well, okay, not really), etc. These bins can be organized into various clip sets, which is essentially a collection of different bins. The Clipboard Recorder is a special clip set which automatically fills its bins with anything that is copied to the clipboard. You can also add things to bins by dragging them into the bin, selecting it and clicking on the arrow that points towards the bin, or using a keyboard shortcut that you can define. The bin will then show a small preview, and hovering over it will show a full preview window of the bin’s contents. To get stuff out of a bin, you can use a keyboard shortcut or drag it out of the bin. Or, you can click on the arrow that points away from the bin–this will not only paste the contents of the bin but will add the contents to the clipboard.
All in all, iClip is a very well-designed application that can be used to store bits of information that you may need to come back at later. It doesn’t even have to be used for copying/pasting, it could be used to store things like to-dos, etc., and be able to get at them when you need them. There are a number of uses that iClip can be applied with, and it is an essential tool for Mac OS X. If the $30 price tag is a bit steep, iClip lite is a free Dashboard widget version of the app that offers much of the same functionality.
