Getting Pownced Upon It’s Here! The iPhone: Will it Blend?
Jul 09

This week, I officially begin my duties as Student Representative on the California State PTA Board of Managers (one of two student reps in the state!), as our first State Board meeting will be held this week at the Hilton Hotel in Sacramento, CA. Yeah, I know, I just went to Sacramento for the PTA Convention 2 months ago. What can I say.

Anyway, I thought I’d share what my schedule is going to be like (of course as there’s over 100 people on the board, there’s going to be a lot of other things going on at the same time). Chances are I won’t get out of the hotel much.

Wednesday 7/11: I’m carpooling with Kathryn Cross, who is on the Communications Commission and is the immediate past president of 17th District. We’ll leave early in the morning to hopefully arrive in Sacramento around 11 AM so that we can checkin, register for the meeting, pick up board materials, etc. At 11:30 there’s a short (15 minute) BOM meeting simply to ratify all of the Board of Managers (so that they can legally do their job), and then from 12:00-4:30 PM will be lunch and a State Board Orientation, including a training from National PTA on recruitment, retention, and empowerment of PTA membership. Then, 4:30-8:00 PM will be a Board Development session, including dinner. I’ll then have an hour to myself, and then there’s a 9-10 PM Board of Managers reception. Then, off to bed.

Thursday 7/12: Thursday means Commission and Committee meetings. During 9:30 AM-3:30 PM, I’ll be meeting with the Communications Commission. (There will be a buffet lunch break from 12-1 PM.) Thursday is also our picture day, so sometime in there we’ll all be getting our pictures taken. Then, after a short break, I’ll be at a Student Involvement Committee meeting during 4-6 PM. The Board of Managers will then be having a dinner at 6:30-8 PM, and a Board Development/Activity session at 8:30-10 PM. Then, off to bed.

Friday 7/13: It’s Friday the 13th, which means we’re all going to stick together for the day. Following me getting breakfast on my own, we’ll be having Board of Managers Orientation/Development during 9:30 AM-5:30 PM (with lunch at Noon, of course). However after the day-long orientation, we’re free to get dinner on our own, and have the rest of the night to ourselves (except for the District Presidents).

Saturday 7/14: Following breakfast on my own, this is the day of the actual business part of the Board of Managers Meeting. The meeting will be called to order at 9 AM and is expected to end by 1 PM, following this lunch will be provided. Then I’m done, however our 17th District President Deborah Kemper is also carpooling with us, so we’ll be waiting for her to finish the District Presidents Leadership Training which goes till 4 PM. We’ll probably get back to San Mateo around 6-7 PM.

I’m unsure if I’ll have internet access while I’m gone, but I probably won’t be paying the $10 for it unless something comes up where I need it. So yes, this does mean that my blog and my Twitter will be silent during the second half of this week.

I’m really looking forward to this meeting and getting to know the people that I will be working with for the next 2 years! :)

I’ve done it many times before. Did it last May. Heck, in June 2006, I was in Austria for 8 days without ever touching a computer!
